To remove your number from Truecaller, do it in two steps. If you have the app, deactivate your account first: Settings → Privacy Center → Deactivate. Then open truecaller.com/unlisting, enter your number in international format (+1… in the US) and confirm. Truecaller says the number disappears from search within 24 hours. Two catches: unlisting can't be reversed, and a number that is currently marked as spam can't be unlisted at all.
Truecaller is the biggest caller ID database, not the only one. Below are the exact steps for Truecaller, then for Hiya, CallApp, Sync.ME, Eyecon and GetContact, plus what to do when a label comes back or support stops answering. Caller ID apps are one slice of your exposure; the wider cleanup is in our guide on how to remove your personal information from the internet.
Why your name shows up in apps you never installed#
Caller ID apps don't show what you wrote about yourself. They show how other people saved you. Truecaller displays a name suggestion only "once verified through consistent community input"; GetContact shows the tags its users attached to your number; Hiya builds labels from its network and partner data. None of this needs your consent or an account in the app.
That sets the limit of what removal can do. You can switch off how your number is displayed and delete your own profile. You can't stop the next person from saving you as "Mike — landlord, don't answer". So there are two jobs: clear what's visible now, and keep it from coming back.
Truecaller: how to unlist your number#
Step by step#
- Deactivate first, if you use the app. Android: profile icon → Settings → Privacy Center → Deactivate. iPhone: profile avatar (top left) → Settings → Privacy Center → Deactivate. Truecaller's own help articles put deactivation before unlisting.
- Open the unlisting page: truecaller.com/unlisting. It first lists what you'll lose — caller identification, spam protection, one-tap sign-in in other apps — and asks you to confirm.
- Enter the number in international format (for example, +12025550123) and confirm.
- Wait up to 24 hours. Truecaller attributes the delay to caching.
If your number is marked as spam, the unlisting form won't help: Truecaller states that spam-labeled numbers can't be unlisted. Fix the label first (see below).
What unlisting removes — and what it doesn't#
Per Truecaller's EU privacy policy, an unlisted number is "no longer visible to other users". What it doesn't do:
- Old lookups stay on other people's phones. If someone searched your number before you unlisted, the result can be cached on their device; Truecaller suggests clearing history or cache on that phone.
- Name suggestions and spam reports aren't wiped on the spot. The policy says they're deleted two years after they were created.
- It can't be undone. Truecaller says so on the unlisting page itself, so decide before you submit.
Wrong name or a spam label on your number#
Users fix their own name under Edit profile in the app. If you're not a user, write to support: support.eu@truecaller.com from the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland, support@truecaller.com from everywhere else. Truecaller says name updates can take 24–48 hours. A spam label also lifts automatically once reports about the number fall below Truecaller's threshold.
Hiya, CallApp, Sync.ME, Eyecon and GetContact#
| App | How to remove your number | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Hiya | Request form linked from Hiya's privacy help article ("Your data and privacy") to correct a label or remove your number's information; no account needed. Privacy contact: dpo@hiya.com | Hiya powers AT&T Call Protect and Samsung Smart Call, so its labels can show on phones that never installed the Hiya app. Under its US privacy notice, Hiya aims to answer within 45 days (extendable to 90). |
| CallApp | callapp.com/unlist: number with country code → Unlist → follow the confirmation email | Its privacy policy says unlisted names and numbers can be kept for up to 5 years, but are no longer searchable. |
| Sync.ME | sync.me/unsubscribe: name, email, phone number | The page promises removal within 24 hours, but it's framed around New Jersey's Daniel's Law; if that doesn't fit your case, write to privacy@sync.me. |
| Eyecon | Email request under Annex B of Eyecon's privacy policy, which explicitly covers people who don't use the app | Eyecon's operator is Instabridge Sweden AB; name suggestions and spam reports are erased within 2 years. |
| GetContact | getcontact.com/en/manage: verify your number → Visibility settings → off. "Delete my data permanently" where your country has it | Visibility changes take up to 48 hours; full deletion up to 30 days. Don't log back into the app with that number afterwards. |
Keep it from coming back#
Every new person who saves your number in a phone with one of these apps is a potential new label. What protects you is a standing opt-out, not a one-time cleanup, so recheck every few months and after anything that puts your number into new address books — a job change, a public role, a fundraising round.
The other side of the same mechanism: if a caller ID app is on your phone, your contacts feed other people's cards. Turn off contacts access:
- iPhone (iOS 18 and later): Settings → Privacy & Security → Contacts → the app → None, or Limited Access with only the contacts you pick.
- Android (Pixel): Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy → Permission manager → Contacts → the app → Don't allow. Menu names differ on other brands; the fallback is Settings → Apps → the app → Permissions.
If you no longer have the number#
An old number, a number your carrier has already reassigned, a family member's number: there's no dedicated procedure in any of these apps. Truecaller's unlisting page asks only for the number; whether any check follows after you submit isn't documented. For the others, write to the privacy contact, explain why you can't receive a code and attach what proves your link to the number (an old carrier contract, for instance).
If the number has passed to someone new, they can verify it and switch the old labels off themselves — the apps don't strip a previous owner's labels on their own.
If the app refuses or ignores you#
In the EU, EEA and UK, put the request in writing and keep the date. As someone who never used the app, you can object to processing based on the company's "legitimate interests" (GDPR Art. 21(1)) and ask for erasure on that ground (Art. 17(1)(c)). The company has to answer within one month; it can extend by two more months only if it tells you why within the first month (Art. 12(3)).
- Truecaller in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland is True Software Scandinavia AB, Stockholm; privacy contact dpo.eu@truecaller.com; complaints go to Sweden's IMY. One caveat: Truecaller holds a Swedish publishing certificate for its search database and argues this takes parts of that database outside the GDPR, so expect pushback on erasure. In September 2025, Truecaller announced that IMY had dismissed an individual's complaint and found no breach.
- GetContact is run by Getverify LDA in Funchal, Portugal (support@getcontact.com), which puts it under the Portuguese data protection authority, CNPD.
Subject: Erasure request — phone number +1XXXXXXXXXX
I am not a user of your service. You process information linked to my phone number +1XXXXXXXXXX (names, tags, labels, reports).
Under Article 21(1) GDPR I object to this processing, and under Article 17(1)(c) I request erasure of all data linked to this number. Please also tell me where the data came from (Article 15).
Please confirm erasure within one month, as required by Article 12(3). If I do not hear back, I will file a complaint with the supervisory authority.
In the US, California's CCPA gives a right to delete if the company meets the law's size thresholds; businesses have 45 days to respond, extendable by another 45. Truecaller's California notice accepts delete and unlist requests — mark the subject "California Request to Delete". California's new one-stop deletion platform, DROP, covers registered data brokers; as of November 2026 none of the caller ID companies above appear in the state's data broker registry, so DROP won't reach them. New Jersey judges, prosecutors and law enforcement covered by Daniel's Law can email support@truecaller.com with "Request under Daniel's Law" in the subject; Truecaller says it acts within 10 business days.
For anything that needs to hold up legally — a formal complaint, a demand letter, a lawsuit — talk to a lawyer first.
What this doesn't fix#
People-search sites and breaches. Caller ID apps are one source. Your number also sits in data broker files and leaked databases; the broker opt-outs are in our personal information removal guide, and you can see which breaches include your number with our guide on how to check a data breach.
Your own lookups. Truecaller Premium's "Who viewed my profile" tells users who looked them up, with a notification once three or more people have viewed the profile; on Android, "Who searched for me" flags exact-number searches. Checking a counterparty or a candidate through Truecaller can tell them they were checked. Executives should run those checks from a separate setup — more in OPSEC for executives.
A new number with someone else's history. A recycled number can arrive with the previous owner's labels. Verify it in each app and switch them off.

FAQ#
Can I stop people from saving or tagging my number?#
No. Caller ID apps are built on other people's address books. You can unlist your number and hide or dispute labels, but you can't control what others type into their phones.
Is unlisting from Truecaller free and permanent?#
The unlisting page mentions no fee, and Truecaller warns that unlisting can't be reversed. Removal takes up to 24 hours.
Why does my number still show up after I unlisted it?#
Either 24 hours haven't passed yet, or the result is cached on the phone that searched you before. Truecaller suggests clearing that phone's search history or cache.
Can I unlist a number that's marked as spam?#
Not until the spam label is gone. Ask support to review the label first: support.eu@truecaller.com in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland, support@truecaller.com elsewhere.
Does unlisting from Truecaller remove my number from Hiya or my carrier's caller ID?#
No. Each database is separate. Hiya also powers caller ID for AT&T and Samsung, so a Hiya request is the one that reaches those labels.
